these will form part of a plate of knitted cakes but, as is the way with knitting, i've got distracted and started another project...
first attempt
while searching for knitted food patterns online, i came across this from a jackie annual, 1979. why not take a knitted fry up one step further and wear it? inspirational.
this is my first chunky knit project. it's for my cousin phoebe, who turns 21 tomorrow. she has been asking me to knit her something since i began four or so years ago so i thought this would be suitable.
the pattern is from susan chang on ravelry but i cast on more stitches (30) and knitted it much longer than specified (30 instead of 21 inches). i like how it's looser on the neck and can be worn in different ways.
i started with rowan big wool but it just felt too scratchy for around the neckso i switched to debbie bliss como (cashmere as well as merino) and used bamboo needles.
if you're in london, get yourself to the science museum pronto to see over 200 stitched selves on display (6.45-10pm this evening!) more info below the pictures...
if i had the skills that these amazing knitters and sewers have, i would have created my very own stitched self. these are my favourites: by @GingerKnits (my utmost favourite stitched self). you can see her blog at http://gingerclare.blogspot.com/by @ponddrop (complete with her baby droplet!). her blog is http://dropinthepond.blogspot.com/
the middle one is made by @hoxtonhandmade (http://www.hoxtonhandmade.com/) and the right one by @deadlyknitshade (http://purlinterrupted.co.uk/)
(photo courtesy of @deadlyknitshade)i don't know who made these but i also think they're great (photo courtesy of @deadlyknitshade) - will try to find out and update.
Stitch London teamed up with London’s Science Museum to create a Stitch Yourself exhibit for the re-opening of their Who Am I? gallery.See the Stitch Yourself exhibit for one night only in the main Energy Hall at the Science Museum on 30 June 2010 from 6.45 to 10pm. The exhibit features over 200 entries from all over the world and it's possibly the only time you'll ever get to see an army of tiny stitched people take over one of London's most shiny museums. You can also see Stitch London's knitted chromosomes by Stitchettes Lauren O'Farrell and Marion Crick in the Who Am I Gallery's permanent exhibit.isn't this just fabulous? as spotted on @TheDarkKnit's blog http://the-dark-knit.blogspot.com/
dress designed by knitwear designer jemma sykes
a few days ago, i posted a picture of some giant knitted poufs that i said i'd like to have a go at myself.
via the wonder of twitter, (and more specifically two great knitters @gingerknits and @knitterbird) i now have a pattern. here are some more images of the designer, christien meindertsma, and her giant knitting projects (found via http://polarbearstale.blogspot.com/)i am so inspired watch this space...i love these. but, since i knit, i'd love to try and knit my own. they're designed and made by christien meindertsma but if any knitters know where i'd go about finding a pattern for something like this, please do let me know!
update: i have found a more experienced knitter willing to help! will let you know how i get on...
